Full Itinerary: Rainbow Mountain Full Day Tour

We pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at about 4:00 am, and from there we will drive about 4 hours to the south of Cusco. We will follow the highway before following a mountain road that passes through traditional villages and fertile valleys. When we reach the trail head for this hike, we will stop and enjoy a lovely breakfast. If it is a clear day we will be able to see the nearby snow-capped Ausangate Mountain, which is the tallest mountain in the Cusco Province at 6,384 meters or 20,945 feet.

Then we will start hiking at 4,350 meters (14,271 feet) and it will take about 2 hours to reach the top of Rainbow Mountain. First, we will go through a valley, gradually ascending and will be able to see alpacas and llamas. We will reach the first pass which is at 4,710 meters (15,454 feet) and can stop to have a break and eat some snacks.

Here, we will be able to see our destination, and then will finish the hike to the top of Rainbow Mountain which is at 4,980 meters (16,338 feet). This incredible mountain features a mix of colors (red, orange, yellow, green, and purple) as a result from the minerals it is formed from. You will have the option to hike up another 50 meters (164 feet) to take incredible photos of this beautiful natural formation, and finally we will start our descent. Hiking downhill, we will reach our vehicle in about 3 hours. We will then drive back to Cusco, dropping you off at your hotel at approximately 7:00 pm.

Additional Information

  • Perfect for: Travelers looking for a short, challenging hike in a remote area of Cusco Province to visit a one of a kind mountain.
  • Duration: 1 day
  • Level: Difficult, could be a kind of challenge
  • Limited spaces?: This hike does have not a restriction on the number of people allowed, so there is always availability.
  • Acclimatization – Very important: The highest point is 5,030 meters or 16,502 feet, so it is essential that you are well acclimatized to the altitude before beginning the hike. We recommend that you spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco or the surrounding high-altitude area before starting the hike in order to properly acclimatize.

  • A small day backpack to carry your personal belongings and boxed lunch

During the Inca Short Inca Trail, it is important to note that there will be no porters to carry your belongings, we advise you to try to pack as light as possible. The best recommendation is to bring a good quality daypack (there are good brands for adventure travelers) that is light and comfortable. Keep in mind that due to local regulations, your backpack should not exceed 25 liters. Large backpacks cannot enter Machu Picchu; there are lockers at the entrance to Machu Picchu where you can store them.

In case of an emergency, where you need a personal porter, this can be communicated to the sales consultant and booked for an additional charge. However, it is not recommended, since we can send some of your belongings directly to the hotel by train at no additional cost (must be requested in advance).
