Tour details:

The Inca Trail is one of the highlights that Cusco has to offer in tourism terms, this tour ends in Machu Picchu and allows visitors to go over the steps of the ancient Inca culture by going through the “road of the powerful/power” (or Qhapaq ñan in Quechua, the Inca laguage)

While the original pathing  for this tour takes 4 days to be done on its entirety, an alternative tour that takes half the time is also on your reach.

Another reason to consider this tour for your time in Cusco is the chance of visiting Machu Picchu twice.

La entrada al pueblo de Machu Picchu es por las vías del tren.

While visitors skip a big portion of the Classic hike’s by avoiding the first 2 days of the journey, the landscapes and surroundings that can be appreciated by doing this tour are pretty similar. Going from the Andean region of the city to descent into the rainforest’s beginnings of the northern portion of Cusco is still a possibility for this route.

Camino Inca Corto

And if you were wondering, yes, you’ll get to visit the famed Sun’s Gate too (or Inti Punku), by passing this point you’ll visit Machu Picchu on the first day to return the next one for a thorough guided visit that will allow you to explore the site with more detail.

Be ready for an early wake up call, pickups for this tour are usually programmed around 5:00 AM with Ollantaytambo as our first destination. Our train’s departure from this town’s station will be programmed at 6:15 AM to the 104th Kilometer of Cusco’s highway.

The route is parallel to the Vilcanota or Urubamba River, this way you’ll be able to appreciate the landscapes that are present in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The train ride will be approximately 1 hour and 15minutes, and will take us directly to the trek´s beginning checkpoint, known as KM 104.

Once at the KM104 check point, we will have some time to get ready for the day´s hike. You should be sure to bring your original passport since you won’t get to enter the trail if you don’t possess it, since this is the very first checkpoint along the Inca Trail. Here you will visit the first Inca site on this trail, Chachabamba – the first ancient Incan checkpoint for entering to the short Inca trail hike, and will have a brief guided tour to understand its importance and you absolutely have time enough to get many photos.

Chachabamba is one of the few inca ruins that one gets to see through the short inca trail tour

The hike will begin from KM 104 on uphill trail towards the Inca Trail. If the weather is nice, we will have beautiful views of the Urubamba River and the surrounding Inca Sites. There will also be waterfalls on the way.

After somewhat of 3 hours of hiking, the path reaches the most drawing archaeological site on route, Wiñaywayna, which consists of andean terraces as in Machu Picchu, it is located at 8 500 FASL.

After receiving a complete breakdown of all the information that’s known about this site, we’ll be preparing ourselves for lunch. After a small resting, we’ll continue with the hiking to the famed Sun’s Gate (Inti Punku), from here, hikers can appreciate Machu Picchu’s citadel and scenery for a set of wonderful photos at the spot.

We’ll eventually leave the world wonder for this first day, a down-ride bus will take us from here to Machu Picchu’s town or Aguas Calientes. By spending some time in the locality, we’ll be able to enjoy the thermal baths there or do some exploration on our own before or after the dinner that we have programmed for the night. Make sure to get some good rest for the next day’s visit to Machu Picchu.
