Inca Trail Location

Classic 4-Day Inca Trail

The Inca Trail is a term used to describe a tour that goes from Cusco’s city or the Sacred Valley of the Incas through Andean highlands to the rainforest region of Cusco. The four day version of this tour is located at the 82nd Kilometer of Cusco’s highway, which is also located by the Machu Picchu’s train line and ends at the ancient Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu.

The trail passes through several Inca ruins, including Llactapata, and offers breathtaking mountain views. Llactapata is an Inca site located in Cusco, built around the 12th century as a viewpoint to control the passage of travelers along the Inca Trail. The site consists of stone buildings, terraces, and aqueducts and was rediscovered in 1912 by Hiram Bingham.

The Inca Trail is a challenging hike due to its high altitude, but the scenic route, which takes hikers from dense jungle to mountain passes, is well worth the effort.

Tips:

1. Train beforehand: The Inca Trail is physically demanding, so it’s essential to be in good physical shape before embarking on the journey.

2. Pack light: You’ll be carrying your gear for four days, so pack only the essentials and leave the rest behind.

3. Acclimatize: Cusco is at a high altitude, so spend a few days there to acclimate before starting the trail.

4. Hire a guide: A knowledgeable guide can provide valuable insights and help you navigate the trail.

5. Bring layers: The weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers for cold mornings and evenings.

Short 2-Day Inca Trail

The Short Inca Trail begins at Km 104, a stop on the Cusco-Aguas Calientes train line.

The hike to Wiñay Wayna takes 2-3 hours, and the additional 2 hours to reach Inti Punk (or The Sun’s Gate as translated from Quechua language) the Machu Picchu entrance is a steady climb.

Most visitors do not explore the ruins until the following day. The recently cleared and constructed trail you will follow passes near the original Inca trail that climbs from the newly excavated Choquesuysuy ruins, but this route is reserved for workers on the hydroelectric project.

Once across the river, the trail heads southwest, passing Chachabamba with its ruined buildings, fountains, shrine, and round reservoir. Dating back to the late 15th century, the site likely had religious functions and may have guarded access to Machu Picchu. It was uncovered by Paul Fejos’ expedition in the 1940s after being hidden by the jungle.

Tips:

1. Be prepared: The 2-day tour is demanding like 4-day option, so make sure you’re in good shape.

2. Plan ahead: Book your tour and permits in advance, as spaces fill up quickly.

3. Pack light: You’ll be carrying your gear for two days, so pack only the essentials.

4. Bring water: Staying hydrated is crucial, so bring enough water and electrolyte-rich snacks.

5. Enjoy the scenery: The 2-day tour is a fast-paced adventure, so take time to enjoy the breathtaking views and soak in the history of the Inca Trail.

We must disclaim that even if you get to reach the entrance checkpoint for this pathing, you won’t be able to go through the Inca Trail without the assistance of an authorized tour operator of the region. The government has control over this route as it’s considered a cultural patrimony, therefore, some measurements are needed to ensure the correct use of the trail.
