Choquequirao, an archaeological site that rivals the famous Machu Picchu in grandeur and mystery, rises deep in the Cusco region. Although its beauty and historical significance are indisputable, Choquequirao remains one of Peru’s best kept treasures.

Today is a very important day because you will receive the necessary information for your trekking trip, such as what to bring, how far our tour is, what places you will see, etc. Schedule is usually at 17:00hrs.

Your pick up will be between 4 and 4:30 in the morning. You will have a 4–5-hour drive from Cusco to Capuliyoc, where we will begin our first day hike. Once you arrive at the trailhead, you will meet the staff that will help you along the way such as the muleteers, our cook and the mules that will carry all our equipment, we will enjoy a delicious and fresh breakfast.

This day our hike will offer magnificent views of the valley and the Apurimac River and if we are lucky and have good weather it is possible to catch the flight of condors. The hike begins with a 2-hour downhill trek on a cobblestone road to reach our lunch spot called Cocamasana. After lunch and a short siesta, you will be back on the road for another 2 hours downhill hike to our first campsite in Chikiscca. Chikiscca is a small farming village and we may encounter local mosquitoes.

Today we will start our hike at approximately 5:00hrs don’t worry about setting your alarm, rest up we will wake you up and offer you a hot drink. We will have a revitalizing breakfast for you and then we will set off on our challenging day. The first section will be an hour and a half downhill to the place called ”La Playa”, located next to the river. This place is the lowest point of the trail and we will encounter mosquitoes, so be sure to dress appropriately. You will cross the Apurimac River over the bridge and begin a 2-hour ascent to the village of Santa Rosa where we rest and stop for lunch. This part of the hike is a bit difficult, but as you continue uphill, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the canyon.

After a short siesta, you will continue climbing for 2-3 hours. This last section is considered the most challenging, but you will enjoy every step of the trail as the views at the end of the trail are spectacular. Finally, we will camp in the village of Marampata, with breathtaking views of the Andes, neighboring valleys and hopefully some condors flying overhead. After dinner, be sure to look up at the sky! This is the best place on the route for stargazing.

Enjoy the mild climate of the area and breakfast contemplating the wonderful views from this place, it will not be necessary to pack up at all because we will spend a second night in the same camp. Today we will explore and visit the fantastic ruins of Choquequirao archaeological park. Before leaving, you will receive a packed lunch that you can enjoy at the citadel. After a 1.5-hour flat walk, your guide will give you the necessary explanation of this hidden treasure called Choquequirao, you will have the necessary photos of the site. This archaeological site is considered the last Inca city, sister of Machu Picchu. It is here that you will have plenty of free time to explore independently.
We will find a very special place to have our box lunch and head to the lower part of Choquequirao, the most recently discovered section of cultivated terraces. You will be impressed by how they built these terraces for agriculture. Finishing the tour and exploration of the site, you will begin your 1.5-hour hike back to the camp. A delicious dinner and hot beverages will be waiting to comfort you.

Just like every day we will wake you up very early, we should have rested enough to start the day since a long day of walking awaits us. We will have a good breakfast. The first return section will begin with 2 hours downhill from the Marampata campsite to Santa Rosa and then another hour to ´´La Playa”. Because it is all downhill, walking sticks will be a great help and will keep us balanced during the hike. Afterwards it will be a 1 hour climb to Chikiscca for lunch. and then 1 more hour to the camp called Cocamasana, where you will finally have time for a well-deserved rest and dinner.

This will be our last day of hiking, it will be a 2 hour climb to reach the beginning of the trail in Capuliyoc where we will have our lunch and a car that will transport us to our next destination, here we will say goodbye to part of our staff and we will continue with our guide and chef. This will be the last time you see the beautiful views that the Apurímac River offers, so be sure to enjoy them.

After lunch, it will be a 4-hour drive to Ollantaytambo station, where your trekking chef will prepare your last dinner. Later we board the train to Aguas Calientes.

At 5:30 hrs. we will go by bus to Machu Picchu to the upper part of the site, through the Circuit N°2 your guide will give you all the information about Machu Picchu. We will show you the most requested place from where you can see the sunrise and take pictures. Then, your guide will lead you through the main sectors of the citadel for a total of 3.00 hours. At the end of the tour, you will have some time to yourself or, if you organized an extra hike, Huayna Picchu Mountain* or Machu Picchu Mountain, your guide will show you where to start this hike.

For your return to the town of Aguas Calientes we recommend you to be at least 2 hours before the departure of your train. Your guide will explain about your train schedule before your return. The return by train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo will take approximately 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, our representative will be waiting for you to the right of the exit door of the station with a sign with your name on it to locate you.
The car ride to Cusco will be approximately 2 hours and will have you dropped off at your hotel in Cusco or straight to Cusco airport.

OPTIONS: *Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain are both additional hikes available once inside Machu Picchu. Either extra hike may be hikes after your guided tour of Machu Picchu and must be arranged ahead of time. Both hikes are subject to availability and at an extra cost of USD $75 per person.

  8. Tickets: All tickets are included for Choquequirao site, entrance to Machu Picchu Circuit N°2, round trip bus tickets to/from Aguas Calientes.
  9. Train Tickets: Train tickets are in tourist class Peru Rail or Inca Rail, from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes it is approximately at 19:00hrs and from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo is approximately at 14:55hrs, if you hoping to upgrade to Vistadome or 360° train then is $ 75 one way and $125 round trip.
  10. Transfers: All transfers are included in our services till the end of the trip.
  11. Meals: Only the meals specified in the itinerary are included.

Not included

  • Huayna Picchu or Machupicchu mountain ticket extra cost 75USD.
  • Flights: Flying to Cusco Peru can be tricky. Delays occur often and it is not uncommon for flights to be cancelled. Please be sure to arrive in the city at least two days before your trek start date. LATAM is the most reliable of the airlines, you must be sure that your domestic flights do not cause you to miss any of your tours.
  • Gratuities: Tipping is always appreciated and should be based completely on your satisfaction. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels.
  • Travel Insurance: This is not required, but always recommended. For those of you who live at sea-level, landing in Cusco Peru will take an adjustment period. Most people need one or two days to adjust. In case you have a hard time adjusting to the altitude.
  • Day packs: We recommend having snacks, water, hat, layers of clothing, insect repellent, documents and camera at all times, so you will probably have a small bag.
