Packing list:

  • CLOTHING: Knowing that in Cusco we have the rainy and dry seasons, the most important thing is to keep in mind what clothes we will wear on our trip to Cusco, and we must choose appropriate clothing to wear according to the occasion. During the rainy season, this region is the most affected, and weather conditions in this area of the country are very changeable. As you climb in altitude, temperatures can reach up to 16 – 18°C. It is imperative that you wear waterproof clothing and footwear as well as warm clothes, especially at night.
  • SUN BLOCK: Peru and especially Cusco have the highest ultraviolet rays and harmful radiation for the skin. So sunscreen you should bring.
In addition, to be protected from radiation it is highly recommended that you wear a hat or cap and sunglasses.
  • REPELLENT OR BUG SPRAY: If you travel in the dry season, in every trip you make around Cusco and Machu Picchu you cannot forget a good mosquito repellent. These insects are present all year round, especially in the months of August and October in the most natural areas that are close to the jungle, as is the case of Machu Picchu. In addition, good advice to avoid mosquito bites is to take food with high vitamin B content during the days prior to your trip.
  • BACKPACK: We recommend moving around Cusco and surroundings. It is essential to carry a backpack in which you can carry your passport, water, extra money, bug spray, sun block, raincoat. In this case, we recommend a comfortable size to carry, just enough to avoid being overloaded.
  • PASSPORT: Normally you must carry your passport on your trips, but it is important to remember this, as there will be many times when you will be asked for your ID and you will have to show it. For example, it will be essential to carry your passport in places such as: the entrance to Machu Picchu. To access the citadel, it is mandatory that you show both the entrance ticket and your passport. In some cases, at the train station to Machu Picchu and at the bus stop to go up to the archaeological site.
  • POWER ADAPTER: In Peru various types of plugs are used (flat, round and triple) and the current is 220 volts and 60 hertz. If the current or the plugs in your country are different, it is essential that you bring an adapter, both to charge your electronic devices and to convert the current and not damage any of them.
  • ELECTRONIC DEVICES: The camera to make sure you don’t miss a single moment of your trip. What’s better than coming back from a trip and reviewing all the photos to remember the moments? If possible, bring a portable charger and a large capacity card or memory for the camera. We assure you that in Cusco you will not stop taking pictures of every corner you visit, so it is important that you are prepared to not run out of battery or memory space.
  • MONEY: Many places in Cusco, such as restaurants, market, silver and alpaca stores, offer card payment, so it is not necessary to carry too much cash during your trip. Also, if you have euros or dollars in cash, there are many exchange houses in the center of Cusco (Sol Avenue) where you can exchange for soles, the national currency of Peru. It is also possible to pay with dollars or tip in dollars, which is common most in tourist places.
  • MEDICINES: Peruvian pharmacies sell basic medicines without a prescription, while other specialty medicines can only be bought with your own prescription, so if you need any special medicine, we recommend that you carry your doctor’s prescription with you. Also, in Cusco pharmacies you will find Diamox, which is a pill recommended alleviating altitude sickness specially to go to rainbow mountain where is 5,000 masl.
  • TRAVEL INSURANCE: Because there are so many logistics to plan and pay for before your trek occurs, payment for your trek is due even if you are unable to complete the hike. Please read our Booking Conditions carefully, so you know what is due. Obtaining travel insurance before you leave home is strongly encouraged. This way, if something happens, and this is rare, you will not be out of pocket a tremendous amount of money. Alpaca will provide a letter and your invoice to submit to your insurance in this case to help expedite your processing.
